Secret Garden Bracelet: A Hand-Fabricated Masterpiece by Ayuko Sakurai

Exploring the Beauty of Chased Designs and Hand-Fabrication

Ayuko Sakurai, an accomplished artist and metalsmith, has created a truly unique and captivating piece of jewelry with her Secret Garden Bracelet. Inspired by the traditional metalsmithing technique of chasing, Sakurai has transformed the surface of brass into a canvas, using steel tools to create intricate and delicate floral designs. This bracelet is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity, showcasing the possibilities of hand-fabrication in jewelry making.

What sets the Secret Garden Bracelet apart from other designs is the close relationship between the fabricated surface of brass and the three-dimensional shapes adorning it. Sakurai meticulously chased the lines and curves on the surface using hand-made lining tools, ensuring every detail was carefully crafted. The result is a stunning combination of texture and form, where the metal itself becomes a work of art.

Not only did Sakurai focus on the surface design, but she also paid great attention to the creation of the embellishments. The rosy glass stones, which add a touch of color to the bracelet, were meticulously fused to a copper base. Each stone was carefully crafted to achieve the desired shape and hue. The hand-fabricated shapes, such as the three-dimensional rose, were riveted onto the bracelet, further enhancing its visual appeal.

The realization of the Secret Garden Bracelet involved a meticulous process. Sakurai engraved the drawings on brass without cutting or losing any metal, using a set of specially made steel tools and stamps. The depth of the stamps varied, reflecting the artist's intention to create a comfortable grip as she hammered. Unlike many artists who prefer softer metals for chasing, Sakurai chose to work with harder brass, showcasing her mastery over the material. After the surface was chased and cleaned, the hand-fabricated shapes and glass stones were carefully riveted into place.

Measuring 60mm in width, 85mm in length, and 75mm in height, the Secret Garden Bracelet is a testament to Sakurai's technical skill and attention to detail. Every aspect of the design has been carefully considered and executed, resulting in a truly exceptional piece of jewelry.

Throughout her creative process, Sakurai faced numerous challenges. One of the most significant was the experimentation with glass and copper fusion. She spent countless hours observing the behavior of the materials under different temperatures, ensuring she achieved the desired color and movement. This experience led her to explore the creation of artificial materials, allowing her to freely design shapes, patterns, and colors that may be difficult to obtain naturally.

The Secret Garden Bracelet was photographed in 2015 by Liaung Chung Yen, an artist and lecturer at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Sakurai's research for this design was extensive, involving the study of traditional chasing tools and techniques. She closely examined sample tools from her professor and even had the opportunity to learn from a professional chasing artist during an internship. This traditional technique not only connected Sakurai to the history of metalsmithing but also allowed her to contribute to its preservation for future generations.

Ayuko Sakurai's Secret Garden Bracelet is a testament to her creativity, skill, and dedication to the art of jewelry making. Its intricate chased designs, combined with hand-fabricated elements, create a harmonious and captivating piece. This exceptional design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2019, recognizing its outstanding craftsmanship and innovative approach. The Secret Garden Bracelet is not only a beautiful piece of jewelry but also a symbol of the endless possibilities that can be achieved through hand-fabrication.
